NEUSCHWANSTEIN

NEUSCHWANSTEIN AND HOHENSCHWANGAU CASTLES

The Alp’s Bavarian fairy tale castle. The castle made famous all over the world by Walt Disney film “The Sleeping Beauty ".

Neuschwanstein, built by King Ludwig II in 1869, overlooks the villages of Füssen and Schwangau from a height of 965 metres. The magnificent surrounding landscape is characterised by an abundance of lakes, among which, the small Alpsee stands out for its rare beauty.

The richly furnished interior rooms are a tribute to the musical genius of Richard Wagner.

"This romantic place has always fascinated me not only for its beauty but also for its history. A visit to the castle is a must, even if it is always crowded. The area surrounding the castles and the area of Fussen offer many hiking and biking tours, it would be a shame to visit only the castle of Neuschwanstein.

The castles are illuminated at night and offer a wonderful picture. It guarantees amazing night-time pictures, thanks to the reflections of the Schwansee lake too."

MARIENBRUCKE AND TAGELBERRGBAHN

To enjoy a splendid view of the castle, it is recommended to reach the Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge), so called in honour of Queen Mary, Ludwig II’s mother, who is suspended above the Pöllat gorge.

If you are looking for a panoramic and less touristy hiking trail, the trail starts over the Marienbrucke bridge and reaches the top of Tegelbergkopf. This peak was supposed to be the site of construction of a grand new castle for Ludwig, which was designed but never started.

Continuing on up you arrive almost to the top of Tegelbergkopf, where you will find the cable car and panoramic restaurant. Taking the cable car will return you to the valley.

Tegelbergbahn cable car valley station is connected to the castle car parks by a convenient cycle and pedestrian path.
