MELLO BLOCCO AND VAL DI MELLO BOULDERING MEETING

Melloblocco, in the heart of Masino valley, is one of the largest bouldering meeting in the world.
The reasons for its success are the need for wilderness and natural beauty, the wish to meet boulderers from all over the world and to enjoy sport outdoors.

Filorera, Sasso Remenno, Val di Mello are the main locations of this event in the Masino Valley.

Bouldering, literally climbing on boulders, meets all these requirements, with minimal environmental impact and strong integration with the most advanced models of sustainable land development.

Right from the start, the non-competitive side of the event was especially appreciated, gathering hundreds and thousands of young boulderers, older climbers and mountaineers from all corners of the world.

VAL DI MELLO PARADISE FOR CLIMBERS

Val di Mello is vehicle-free climbing paradise thanks to the vertiginous granite walls with popolar names: Il Pricipizio degli Asteroidi, Luna Nascente, Kundalini, Il Giardino delle Bambine Leucemiche are some of the epic walls in the valley.

Following the path beside the river, it is easy to find beautiful spots perfect to a great picture, bouldering or for a fresh bath in the blue and clear water.

The first part of the valley is a great excursion also for family. Few mountain houses offer a place for lunch or dinner with typical local products.

Trekkers that love nature and wild itineraries can walk for hours until huts (rifugio Allievi is the biggest structure in Val di Mello), bivouacs and peaks up in the mountains.

Remarkble is the epic Sentiero Roma, a long trial from Bagni Masino to Filorera (or even longer leaving from Novate Mezzola in Valchiavenna).

SASSO REMENNO DI BIGGEST STONE OF EUROPE

In the middle of the Masino Valley, beside the main road to San Martino, it is located the Sasso Remenno the biggest boulder in Europe.

This monolithic has a volume of hal million of cube meters. Climbers have the opportunity to choose different level of difficulty, for beginners and experts, and enjoy here this outdoor activity.
The area is became also a training center for Mountain Club and Mountain Rescue Team.

The wines of Valtellina care made of the Nebbiolo grape, which is locally called Chiavennasca.

The intruduction of this kind of grape in Valtellina is not very clear. Some authors wrote that it was brought in the Middle Ages, otherat the end of the eighteenth century during the Napoleonic conquest. Other indigenous varieties are Pignola, Rossola and Prugnola, but are of minor importance since the marginal crops used, as well as Merlot and Pinot Nero, to complement the blend.

Valtellina Superiore DOCG:Wine produced from the vineyards with the best exposure and sunny area between the City of Monte Buglio and Tirano. Produced following a strict discipline, is a major red from aging, austere, dry and tannic, but velvety. The minimum alcohol consumption is 12%, with a minimum period of aging of 24 months, of which at least 12 in oak barrels. In particular years, with 36 months of aging is permitted qualification "Riserva." The Valtellina Superiore DOCG can also have the names of five divisions: Maroggia Sassella, Grumello, Inferno and Valgella. The Valtellina Superiore one of the most authentic expressions of the Valtellina.

Sforzato (or Sfursat) di Valtellina DOCG:
Wine result of a selection of Nebbiolo that immediately after the grape harvest are placed on racks for about three months in a dry and well-ventilated called "fruit cellars". After drying, the grapes loose about 40% of its own weight. This concentrated juice has developed special aromatic fragrances and is ready for crushing. Only after 20 months of aging this red wine is ready for tasting. The minimum alcohol content is 14%. Variety: Nebbiolo (min. 90%) and other varieties suitable for cultivation in the Lombardy Region (10%).

The "Bitto cheese" is a mixture of cow and goat milk, symbol of the dairy production of Lombardia region.

It has a long tradition and an extraordinary attitude for aging and it is named  from the stream Bitto, that flows into the Adda river close to the town of Morbegno .

The cheese is produced in the valleys Gerola and Albaredo, at an altitude of 1400 to 2000 meters. The diarymen are committed to maintain a range of traditional practices that increase the quality of the cheese, as well as to play a vital role in the preservation of the environment and biodiversity in the Alps.

First, practice the pasture turnato : within three months of pasture , the herd is led through a journey in stages , ranging from the lowest to the highest. Along the way , the traditional "calècc" - age-old stone buildings - act as cabin itinerant work  (always by hand) , so that the milk does not have to travel, if not for a few meters , and can be worked on before his calor natural scattering. Another practice , promoted by the manufacturers of Bitto , is the pasturing , along with the cattle herd , some heads of goat Orobica . The milk of these animals comes to 10-20% in the production of Bitto and gives it a special aroma and persistence.

To ensure maximum control of the health conditions of the livestock , farmers milk by hand only. The salting of the cheese is dry ; this will form a crust more delicate, ensuring a better maturation . It is also strictly forbiddento use some supplements in cattle feed and to use additives or selected yeasts in cheese production.

At maturation the taste is sweet , delicate and tends to become more intense and lively with aging. In the young stages is a delicious and classic cheese cutting . After a year of seasoning, increases its nobility , becomes excellent product to accompany to the best food and the best Valtellina's Wines.

The dairymen are gathered in a  Manufacturers Association called "Associazione produttori valle del Bitto"

BRESAOLA SALTED BEEF OF VALTELLINA AND VALCHIAVENNA

Bresaola of Valtellina, or Brisaola in the valley of Chiavennais a typical salted beef that has been aged two or three months, until it becomes hard and turns a dark red, almost purple colour.

It is made from top (inside) round, and is lean and tender, with a sweet, musty smell.

It originated in Valtellina and Valchiavenna, two valleis in the center ot the Alps of northern Italy's Lombardy region. The word comes from the diminutive of Lombard bresada (braised).

As a starter , bresaola is usually sliced paper thin and served at room temperature or slightly chilled. It is most commonly eaten on its own, but may be drizzled with olive oil and lemon juice or balsamic vinegar, and served with rocket salad, cracked black pepper, and freshly shaved Parmesan cheese

CHIAVENNA THE MEDIEVAL VILLAGE IN THE CENTER OF THE ALPS

The romantic town of Chiavenna, awarded the orange flag of quality by the Italian Touring Club, is the main town of ValChiavenna, with Valtellina are part of Sondrio province, and cosily nestled between the mountains and cliffs, with peaks overhead reaching to 3000m.

The village, which already existed in Roman times with the Latin name of Clavenna, links its history to the caravans of the Alps, through the Spluga and Septimer passes, transporting goods between northern and southern Europe.

"We were born and raised in Chiavenna. This little place in the heart of the Alps had been our world for so many years, but it is definitely worth a visit. Our friends and family that come to visit us, recognize its charm. It is easy to lose track of time while talking in front of a good coffee.

Chiavenna may be the best place to stay and discover the Como Lake and Switzerland’s surroundings. We love its little streets, typical "crotti”, woods, and mountains. It will be forever in our hearts. "

Fabio and Paolo

The center has preserved the precious medieval architectural features, offering the visitor interesting views along the river Mera and the main street Via Dolzino.

Also known for the famous "Crotti", natural cellars fed by subterranean currents of air at a constant temperature, ideal for storage of cheeses, meat sand the characteristic Bresaola called in Chiavenna "Brisaola". In some cases used as typical restaurants open to the public.
